 Organic and Supramolecular Chemistry – Career Opportunities
The specialisation in Organic & Supramolecular Chemistry offers an outstanding preparation for work in both industrial and academic environments. Chemistry is known as the central science, connecting physical sciences with life sciences. Chemistry is of great importance, not only in the chemical industry but also in nearly every sphere of science, technology and numerous other industrial sectors. Consequently, the specialization in chemistry provides the basis for a diverse range of local, national and global employment opportunities.

Organic and Supramolecular Chemistry – Curriculum
The curriculum of the MSc in Life Sciences – Organic & Supramolecular Chemistry provides students with a solid understanding of the principles of organic and supramolecular chemistry, connecting fundamentals to cutting-edge research and industrial challenges. The curriculum offers students optimal preparation for a career in R&D in the pharmaceutical, biopharmaceutical and agrochemical sectors (among others), where the understanding and practice of chemistry are crucial. The choice of available modules allows students to deepen their knowledge in adjacent disciplines to individually address their interests and career ambitions.
The modules offered in the specialization encompass a range of different topics covering theory and practical applications. Two modules cover modern concepts, technologies and applications of organic chemistry (e.g. multicomponent reactions, photochemistry, electrochemistry, flow chemistry, (bio)catalysis) and (complex) molecules synthesis (e.g., drugs, agrochemicals, polymers, biomolecules). Two further modules cover the design of functional (nano)systems, bioconjugates (e.g. biological drugs) and (bio)active surfaces. Further modules selected from related specializations, in particular analytical chemistry, biotechnology, chemical engineering and pharmatechnology, complete the programme and prepare students for work in interdisciplinary environments. The broad range of specialist and generic modules allows each student to create an individually tailored study programme.
Students may also take an extra semester at a foreign partner university allowing them to gain an additional degree.
The MSc concludes with an eight month thesis, usually conducted on site at one of the industrial partners in our network. Alternatively, the thesis can be carried out at any university world-wide which meets our standards. The thesis forms the basis for successful employment in industry or in academia.

The MSc in Life Sciences – Organic and Supramolecular Chemistry is especially suited for students with a BSc degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or related fields.

Double Degree

Double Degree with Linköping University and the University of Chemistry and Technology Prague

Selected students from our Master's programme can earn a double degree by completing an additional semester at Linköping University or the University of Chemistry and Technology Prague. They will receive two titles: MSc in Life Sciences FHNW and MSc in Chemistry from Linköping University or MSc in Synthesis and Manufacturing Pharmaceuticals UCT Prague.

Admission

Graduates with an excellent Bachelor's degree are admitted directly if they:

  • hold a Bachelor's degree in a related technical field from a university of applied sciences with a mark of A, B or ≥ 5 or an equivalent mark (≥ good)
  • or demonstrate an equivalent background (BSc) and practical experience
  • and have excellent English skills.

Prospective students who meet most but not all of the entry requirements are invited to an interview.
